The Netherlands will introduce additional controls at its land borders starting December 9 as part of a broader effort to combat illegal migration.
From December 9, the military police will carry out extra border checks to fight human trafficking and illegal immigration.
The Cabinet has decided to limit the free movement of people and goods between EU countries across the Dutch border for six months. It is unclear how intensive the checks will be. Currently, the military police are not increasing their staff for these tasks.
EU member states can only resume border controls in cases of unforeseen circumstances or emergencies.
The Dutch government claims that there is a large influx of asylum seekers and therefore justifies the border control measures. Currently, the military police are conducting only selective checks at border crossings.
