Dutch police have arrested five more people, aged 18 to 37, for involvement in violence following Thursday’s football match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax in Amsterdam. The suspects face charges of “public violence against persons.”
Further unrest erupted Monday, when rioters set an empty tram and a police car ablaze, with some reportedly chanting “Free Palestine.” Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the violence as “shocking and reprehensible,” noting a rise in antisemitic incidents.
In response, Amsterdam temporarily banned demonstrations until Thursday, except for a pro-Palestinian protest in a designated park. This ban has angered activists, who argue for their right to protest Israel’s actions.
Following Thursday’s match, incidents reportedly included attacks on Maccabi supporters and retaliatory acts involving an alleged assault on a taxi and the burning of a Palestinian flag. In total, 63 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, and investigations continue.
