Over the past 10 years, the number of sexual crimes on public transportation in the German capital has increased by 3.6 times. The Berlin government has proposed the introduction of train cars exclusively for women.
Last year, 391 such incidents were recorded in the Berlin metro, including 145 on the subway and 132 on the city’s S-Bahn trains. The lawmakers have suggested installing clearly marked zones at stations with emergency call buttons and surveillance cameras, as well as creating women-only cars, which could be located either near the train operator’s cabin or at the end of the train.
For example, in Japan, women-only cars are available from early morning until 10:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with exceptions made only for wheelchair users and boys under 12 years old.
