Germany: Motion to ban AfD submitted in parliament

A formal request to ban the AfD has now reached Bundestag President Bas, with CDU member Marco Wanderwitz leading the initiative.

Backed by 113 Bundestag members, the petition aims for quick action this legislative period, allowing the Federal Constitutional Court to potentially start proceedings.

However, banning a political party in Germany faces high legal obstacles. Critics argue that proving the AfD’s active anti-constitutional behavior may be challenging. Meanwhile, Greens members, led by Renate Künast, propose a counter-motion for an extensive investigation into potential unconstitutional actions.
