Greece plans a major restructuring of its military

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias aims to implement a significant overhaul of the country’s military structure to improve efficiency and modernize all branches of the Armed Forces.

The new strategy focuses on optimizing the army, navy, and air force to better meet current operational needs. Key changes include the disbanding of at least six under-strength infantry battalions and the redistribution of personnel to units with a targeted staffing level of 70%.

This restructuring is intended to move away from the longstanding practice of maintaining military facilities solely to support the local economy. A detailed plan will be presented to parliament on Wednesday.

Dendias reforms will also address underutilized military bases. The Ministry of Defense plans to close several facilities to consolidate resources and enhance efficiency. Specifically, it is expected that 132 military installations will be closed by 2030 as part of a long-term optimization plan.
