Starting this Saturday and running until November 25, the Pontifical Foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is launching Redweek, a global initiative designed to raise awareness about the persecution of Christians worldwide.
During this week, iconic Spanish landmarks, including the Basilica of the Holy Family in Barcelona and Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral, will glow red in a show of solidarity. Other significant sites like the Roman amphitheater in Tarragona and the Basilica of Covadonga will also participate. In addition, more than 115 parishes across Spain will join in, lighting their facades next Wednesday.
The movement extends beyond Spain, with over 1,000 buildings in 20 countries set to take part in this powerful display of support. Redweek has evolved from a single day of awareness into a global event, featuring over 300 activities in Europe, Mexico, Colombia, and Australia, such as prayer vigils, conferences, and exhibitions, all honoring those suffering for their faith.
One of the highlights of this week is ACN’s immersive exhibition, The Beauty of Martyrdom, at Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral. The exhibit, which focuses on Christians in Africa, Pakistan, and Libya, sheds light on contemporary martyrdom. After its launch, it will travel to other cities across Spain.
José María Gallardo, ACN’s director in Spain, emphasized the importance of this week to not only remember but also support those enduring persecution. ACN will also release Pursued and Forgotten, a report examining the situation of Christians in 18 countries where religious freedom is under threat, including regions like Iraq, Syria, and North Korea.
To further highlight the stories of these brave individuals, ACN has collaborated with CRTN to produce the documentary Heroes of Faith, a 26-minute film documenting the struggles and unwavering faith of Christians from Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
