German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently had a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, and the two leaders came to a key agreement: they’re both committed to “bringing peace back to Europe.”
Scholz emphasized how crucial it is for the countries to maintain their long-term partnership, according to a German government spokesperson.
The spokesperson didn’t get into specifics about what exactly the “return to peace” would entail, but both leaders were clearly on the same page about the goal. Scholz also took the opportunity to personally congratulate Trump on his victory in the election.
During their talk, Scholz addressed Trump’s past threats of imposing tariffs on European goods, reminding him that the European Union holds the primary responsibility when it comes to trade matters. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck had previously voiced concerns that such tariffs could specifically target German products, potentially creating new hurdles for the country’s exports.
