Afghan migrant charged with carrying out multiple rapes at a Swedish hospital

An Afghan man, claiming to be 24, faces charges of two rapes and a sexual assault committed at Uppsala Academic Hospital in December 2021.

Prosecutors allege he engaged in non-consensual sexual acts with a woman in her 50s who was hospitalized with a severe illness. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the woman couldn’t receive visitors, leaving her isolated and vulnerable.

Assistant Prosecutor Karin Persson stated that the man exploited the woman’s weakened state, noting that she depended on him for supervision despite his lack of medical training. Evidence includes the victim’s testimony, medical records, and technical findings. Persson described the repeated assaults as especially egregious due to the woman’s need for emergency care.

The man had previously been suspected of another rape in August 2024, but those charges have since been dropped due to lack of evidence. Recently granted Swedish citizenship, he cannot be deported under current laws.
