Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his support for Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right French party National Rally, in light of the charges brought against her.
He compared the accusations to the criminal prosecution of U.S. President Donald Trump, which, according to Orbán, played a key role in his electoral victory.
I can’t believe the news about Marine Le Pen yesterday. Marine, please remember, we are together in this fight! And don’t forget: legal persecution was a decisive step toward President Donald Trump’s victory, Orbán wrote on social media X.
The charges against Le Pen involve the fictitious hiring of assistants by the National Rally group in the European Parliament. The prosecution is seeking a penalty that would prevent those involved from holding public office, with the sentence to take immediate effect. For Le Pen, the measure requested is a five-year ban. If the court approves the immediate enforcement of the sentence, Le Pen would be barred from running in the 2027 presidential election.
The prosecution also requested a five-year prison sentence for Le Pen, with three years suspended and two non-appealable. However, these two years could be replaced with a less severe measure, such as house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
