Slovakia seeks to extend its exemption from the EU ban on Russian oil imports

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár wants to discuss continuing the exemption from the ban on Russian pipeline oil imports at the European Union level.

He mentioned this on Thursday, November 14, during a press conference with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Budapest.

According to Blanár, energy security is crucial for Slovakia, “and we are very open about the fact that Russia has been a reliable partner.”

We have never had issues with Russia failing to fulfill its contracts or deliveries, whether it’s nuclear fuel, gas, or oil. Therefore, it is quite natural that for economies like Hungary and Slovakia, it is almost unacceptable to purchase goods from other countries at prices four or even five times higher, he explained.

Currently, the Slovak refinery, Slovnaft, can process Russian oil into fuel and export it to the Czech Republic, but after December 5, the use of Russian oil will be limited to the Slovak market.
