The leader of the National Rally’s parliamentary faction in France, Marine Le Pen, described the sentence requested by the prosecutor in the case of alleged fictitious hiring of party assistants in the European Parliament as “political death” during a broadcast on TF1.
The prosecution is seeking to bar the defendants from holding public office, with a specific five-year ban proposed for Le Pen. If the court enforces the sentence immediately, she would be unable to participate in the 2027 presidential race.
The prosecutor’s request is extremely excessive, as it seeks a sentence unparalleled with similar cases, amounting to what I consider a demand for my political death with immediate execution, Le Pen stated.
Additionally, the prosecution is calling for a five-year prison sentence for Le Pen, with three years suspended and the remaining two potentially served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. The National Rally party could face a €2 million fine, while Le Pen herself may be ordered to pay €300,000.
