German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has urged all federal states to strictly enforce the ban on carrying knives at Christmas markets, with fines of up to €10,000 for violations.
The knife ban, part of a broader security package, aims to ensure greater safety for visitors. Police presence will be heightened at many locations to enforce the rules, which came into effect on October 31, 2024, and are specifically in force during the Christmas market season. Visitors are prohibited from carrying knives, regardless of whether they are classified as weapons under the Weapons Act.
Exceptions are made for certain groups, including vendors, emergency workers, and firefighters. Knives can be transported if kept out of reach, such as in packaging.
In response to rising violent crimes involving knives, North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Ministry has already increased police presence at public events, including Christmas markets, to support the enforcement of the knife ban and prevent potential threats.
