Poland’s former ruling party faces loss of funding due to financial violations

Poland’s State Electoral Commission has rejected the financial report of the former ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), potentially resulting in the loss of over 75 million zlotys ($18.4 million) in state funding over the next three years.

The rejection follows an August ruling by the Commission, which found that PiS’s electoral committee had used unlawfully obtained benefits. The Commission highlighted financial violations in the party’s election campaign, totaling 3.6 million zlotys.

As a result, PiS’s state funding—nearly 38 million zlotys—was reduced by 10.8 million zlotys, and the same amount was deducted from the party’s annual subsidy of around 26 million zlotys. Additionally, PiS was required to return the disputed 3.6 million zlotys to the national budget.

This latest ruling from the Electoral Commission could lead to PiS losing its three-year subsidy of over 75 million zlotys, which is used for party maintenance, according to RMF FM.

However, the August ruling is not legally binding, and PiS has appealed the decision to the Polish Supreme Court. The court has yet to review the appeal, with no deadline for a decision in sight.
