Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that NATO should closely examine the recent changes in Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which significantly lowered the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons. He made this statement during a press conference at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The Turkish leader emphasized that a war involving nuclear weapons is unlikely to yield any positive outcomes. He expressed hope for the swift achievement of a permanent ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
I believe Russia’s statement about revising its nuclear doctrine is primarily a response to threats against it, particularly those involving conventional weapons, Erdogan explained.
In Erdogan’s view, Moscow’s move warrants discussion at the NATO level. He also underlined that Russia has the capability to defend itself, which is its right.
