The foreign ministers of EU countries have declined to suspend political dialogue with Israel, a measure proposed by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in response to the current situation in Gaza.
During a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, several countries signaled their unwillingness to support Borrell’s proposal. Since such decisions require unanimous agreement, the proposal cannot be implemented at this time.
According to diplomats cited by the press, foreign ministers from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and the Netherlands were among those who opposed the initiative.
At the same time, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed readiness for targeted actions against members of the Israeli government who challenge Palestinians’ right to exist or violate international law.
Last week, it became known that Borrell had suggested suspending political dialogue with Israel due to the ongoing developments in Gaza.
