Another communication cable in the Baltic Sea has been damaged, this time affecting connectivity between Lithuania and Sweden.
Andrius Šemeškevičius, the technical director of Lithuanian telecommunications company Telia, confirmed the incident. The cable was “severed on Sunday morning, around 10:00,” Šemeškevičius stated.
“The systems immediately reported that we had lost communication. Further investigation and analysis revealed that it had been damaged,” he added.
A Telia representative explained that the cable is one of three used to transmit internet connectivity to Lithuania. The damage has reduced the country’s internet bandwidth by one-third, but services for users have been restored through rerouted connections bypassing the damaged section.
This incident follows a similar case involving Finnish company Cinia, whose undersea cable linking Finland and Germany was also recently damaged. The 1,200-kilometer-long cable is a vital direct link between Finland and Central Europe, running alongside critical infrastructure such as gas pipelines and electrical cables.
