In several parts of the UK, schools have closed due to heavy snowfall, as the country braces for the arrival of Storm Bert this weekend.
More than 60 schools in the Highlands of Scotland and 30 in northern Wales have shut down, while in Devon and Cornwall, around 100 schools have either fully closed, partially closed, or opened later than usual due to snow.
A yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued for some parts of the UK until Friday. Further warnings for rain and snow are expected to come into effect this weekend. On Saturday, the second storm of the season will bring snow, rain, and strong winds to parts of the UK.
Storm Bert, named by the Irish Meteorological Service, is forecast to bring snow and rain along with wind gusts of 65–96 km/h (40–60 mph). On the Irish Sea coast, wind gusts could reach up to 113 km/h (70 mph).
The Met Office has warned of potential transport disruptions, flooding, and the possibility of more than 100 mm (4 inches) of rainfall in some areas of Wales and southwest England.
