Lithuania officially gets a new prime minister

On Thursday, November 21, the Seimas of Lithuania voted to appoint Gintautas Paluckas as the new Prime Minister.

Paluckas’s candidacy was supported by 88 members of the Seimas, while 34 voted against and six abstained.

Now, he must present the parliament with a Cabinet of Ministers that has been formed and approved by the President, as well as submit a government activity program for consideration no later than 15 days after his appointment.

After the vote, Paluckas thanked the Seimas for what he called a “celebration of democracy.”

“I believe that during our discussions, echoes of some pre-election battles were still present. I hope they will soon subside, and we can move on to a constructive agenda,” he said.

It is worth noting that Lithuanian Social Democrats, represented by Paluckas, have been criticized for their coalition with the “Nemunas Dawn” party, whose leader has been accused of anti-Semitism.

Previously, President Nausėda promised not to approve government candidates from the “Nemunas Dawn” party.
