China has slammed the United States for it calls an “outdated” approach to nuclear strategy, accusing Washington of clinging to strategic dominance.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian criticized recent comments by US officials, describing them as a reflection of American hegemonic ambitions.
Speaking on Thursday, Lin responded to remarks made by Rear Adm. Thomas Buchanan of US Strategic Command. Buchanan stated that Washington permits a limited nuclear exchange while retaining part of its arsenal as a means to deter further threats. Lin called this approach emblematic of America’s pursuit of “absolute strategic superiority.”
“The relevant statements by US officials reflect the outdated thinking of the United States, which seeks hegemony and absolute strategic superiority,” Lin told reporters. He urged the US to honor its nuclear disarmament commitments, lower strategic risks, and shift away from increasing reliance on nuclear weapons in its national security policies.
Lin also accused Washington of heightening military tensions and worsening global nuclear risks through its policies.
