Buckingham Palace to stop hosting foreign leaders

Over the next three years, Buckingham Palace in London will cease hosting receptions for foreign leaders due to ongoing renovations.

The Emir of Qatar, scheduled to visit London in December, will be the last foreign leader received at the palace. From then on, all official events involving foreign dignitaries will take place at Windsor Castle until 2027.

The renovation of Buckingham Palace, already underway, is expected to be completed by 2027. The project will cost £369 million ($462 million), and some of the palace’s most opulent rooms will remain closed during the work.

As a result of the renovations, King Charles III has had to relocate his office and the dining room where he traditionally enjoys his afternoon tea.

The King and Queen Camilla will continue hosting smaller receptions in Buckingham Palace’s Picture Gallery and other state rooms over the next year. However, these areas are also set to close in 2025.

From that point on, all royal receptions will be moved to St. James’s Palace or Windsor Castle until Buckingham Palace fully reopens in 2027.
