Georgia’s ruling party plans to hold presidential election this year

The Georgian Dream party has announced plans to hold the presidential election in 2024. Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, revealed that the ruling party aims to organize the election soon, with the date to be determined on Tuesday.

“As for the presidential elections, tomorrow the parliament will set the date… It is important that the elections and inauguration take place this year,” Papuashvili emphasized.

This election will mark the end of Salome Zourabichvili’s six-year term as president. Zourabichvili, who has been in significant conflict with the ruling party, was the last president elected through a direct vote.

Following constitutional amendments in 2018, future presidents will be elected for a five-year term by an Electoral College comprising 300 members, including new parliament deputies, local government representatives, and candidates from political parties.
