The “Law and Justice” (PiS) party has nominated historian Karol Nawrocki as its candidate for the presidency of Poland.
This choice may pose a serious challenge to Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who was nominated for president by the ruling Civic Coalition just the day before.
Nawrocki’s candidacy was announced at the party congress in Kraków. The 41-year-old historian has headed the Institute of National Remembrance since 2021. This government agency is responsible for preserving archives and researching the crimes of World War II and the communist era. Previously, Nawrocki served as director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, his hometown.
Experts believe Nawrocki could provide strong competition to Trzaskowski, who has a high chance of reaching the second round of the election. According to analysts, both candidates are expected to be the leading contenders for victory.
The presidential election in Poland will take place in May 2025. The winner will replace Andrzej Duda as president, and if no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, a second round will be held two weeks later.
