The European Commission is organizing a meeting with Romanian authorities and TikTok as Bucharest threatens to block the platform over its role in the presidential elections.
The results of the first election round caused a shock, as right-wing candidate Călin Georgescu secured victory, partly due to his popularity on TikTok. Bucharest has demanded an investigation into the platform’s actions under the EU Digital Services Act.
Romania’s regulator ANCOM announced the start of the process to block TikTok until the investigation is completed. A TikTok representative denied the allegations, stating that no evidence of foreign interference or manipulation has been found on the platform.
The EU plans to hold a meeting with TikTok before the second round of elections on December 8, where Georgescu will face reformist Elena Lasconi.
