South Korea refuses to sell arms to Ukraine: decision based on strategic considerations

The South Korean government has rejected Ukraine’s request to purchase Cheongung surface-to-air missile systems and other weapons, reports SBS.

This decision has sparked discussions after high-ranking sources confirmed the refusal to supply the requested military equipment. According to the information, the refusal applies not only to the Cheongung SAMs but also to other defense systems, such as radar stations for air defense and counter-battery warfare, as well as projectile charges for 155mm shells.

Sources indicate that South Korea’s decision was not influenced by economic factors or international pressure. The primary reason for the refusal lies in strategic considerations, including the desire to maintain balanced relations with other countries, particularly neighboring states such as China and Russia.

Analysts suggest that South Korea is also seeking to avoid complicating its relations with major global powers, which may view the sale of weapons to Ukraine as a violation of diplomatic neutrality.
