German police arrest Islamist suspect over alleged terror plot targeting Christmas markets

A young Islamist suspect was arrested Tuesday evening by Mainz Criminal Inspectorate officials on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks in Germany.

The arrest, authorized by the Koblenz District Court, was based on allegations of preparing a severe act of violence that could threaten the state. Authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s nationality or residence status.

The suspect allegedly became radicalized online as a self-proclaimed “Warrior of Allah.” Investigators accuse him of spreading propaganda for the Islamic State (IS) via social media and messaging apps, glorifying violent jihad and the group’s atrocities.

Alleged Attack Plans with High Casualties

In an earlier October search of the suspect’s home, police discovered two bayonets and four sealed tubes, suspected for pipe bomb construction, along with detailed online instructions for making explosives and detonators. Authorities believe the suspect aimed to carry out a large-scale attack targeting numerous victims.

Despite these findings, the suspect initially remained free until last Tuesday, when a second search uncovered additional materials potentially usable for creating ignition devices. He was promptly arrested and is now in custody. The presumption of innocence applies.

High Alert Amid Terror Concerns

Federal authorities continue to warn that Christmas markets remain prime targets for radical Islamist threats. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, “With the elevated threat level, there’s every reason to act decisively to ensure our safety.” She encouraged the public to enjoy the season while staying alert.
