Majority of Poles back increased defense spending

An IBRiS survey conducted for Rzeczpospolita reveals that most Poles support boosting the country’s defense budget.

The survey, published on Friday, found that 72.9% of respondents were in favor of increased military spending, compared to 18.2% who opposed it, with 9% having no opinion. Public support for higher defense budgets has remained consistent, with 76.7% approval in April 2022.

Rzeczpospolita highlighted that opposition to increased defense spending was low at 12.1%, and only 11.3% were undecided. The newspaper noted that over the past 31 months, support for military investment had slightly decreased by 3.8 percentage points.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Mariusz Błaszczak announced that by 2025, defense spending will reach 4.7% of Poland’s GDP, positioning the country among NATO’s top military spenders. For the upcoming year, Poland is set to allocate 187 billion zlotys to defense.

General Roman Polko, former commander of the GROM military unit, explained that the public’s strong support for defense funding is linked to a desire for security.
