Merkel urges Ukraine to “consider” diplomatic solutions to end the war

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Ukraine and its supporters to consider diplomatic paths to end the war.

She made this statement during an interview with ZDF TV on Thursday evening. Merkel emphasized in her conversation with the journalist that Russia should not win this war.

“It is not only in Ukraine’s interest but also in our interest that Putin does not win this war,” she said. Merkel added that, as Chancellor, she did everything she could to prevent such an escalation. “This is a blatant violation of international law that he (Vladimir Putin) committed against Ukraine,” she said.

However, the former Chancellor also noted that “diplomatic solutions should always be considered in parallel.” According to her, they do not need to be discussed right now but rather when the appropriate time comes. She did not specify when that time might be.

Merkel expressed her support for what the German government is doing for Ukraine and suggested that it will not be easy for Ukraine to defeat Russia. “Nevertheless, I support everything that the international community is doing to put Ukraine in a good position,” Merkel said.
