44 children affected by tear gas at Berlin primary school

An unidentified individual released tear gas at a primary school in Berlin, injuring dozens of children.

The fire department was called to a school in Weißensee, where 44 children were reported affected, according to a police spokesperson. One child suffered severe injuries to their eyes and respiratory system, while others sustained minor injuries. A total of 22 children were transported to hospitals, with the remaining children handed over to their parents.

Police are investigating whether the perpetrator was an adult or a child.

The fire department suspects that the gas was sprayed in a classroom and spread into the hallway through an open door. At the time, many students were passing through the corridor, which led to the high number of affected children.

Despite tests, the specific type of irritant gas used could not be identified, a fire department representative stated.
