In the southeastern city of N’Zérékoré, during a football match, mass riots broke out, resulting in the deaths of approximately 100 people.
Local doctors reported that the victims’ bodies were lying in the hospital, filling the corridors and the morgue. One of the doctors stated that “the morgue is overcrowded, the bodies are lying in rows, and others are on the floor.”
Eyewitnesses said the conflict started after a controversial decision by the referee, which sparked outrage among the fans, who broke onto the field. This is confirmed by video footage from the scene. Soon, the unrest spread to the streets of the city, where mass clashes between fans continued.
The match was part of a tournament organized in honor of the leader of the Guinean junta, Mamadi Doumbouya, who came to power in 2021 after a coup. Such sporting events have become more frequent ahead of the upcoming elections. The authorities of Guinea have not yet commented on the incident.
