Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has postponed his scheduled visit to South Korea following a series of political events surrounding the declaration of martial law by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Although President Yoon announced he would revoke the martial law order, the situation prompted Sweden to reconsider the timing of the trip.
Kristersson’s spokesperson, Tom Samuelsson, explained the decision:
“In light of ongoing events, we have decided to postpone the visit,” Samuelsson stated.
Samuelsson added that Sweden is closely observing the unfolding situation in South Korea, with the Swedish embassy in Seoul maintaining communication with South Korean authorities. He also noted that Prime Minister Kristersson plans to reach out to South Korean officials on Wednesday morning.
Efforts are already underway to determine a possible new date for the visit.
The political climate in South Korea remains tense after President Yoon declared martial law, reportedly to counter “communist forces.” The move sparked immediate backlash, with the South Korean National Assembly voting to demand the revocation of the martial law order.
