South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is under investigation for alleged involvement in an attempted coup.
His initiative to impose martial law has been classified by investigators as “rebellion.” The investigation was launched following an official complaint filed by the opposition.
In the coming days, the country’s parliament will consider the possibility of impeaching Yoon Suk Yeol. To remove the president from office, 200 votes are required. The opposition already holds 192 votes, with five members of the ruling People Power Party indicating their support for impeachment.
Reports suggest that one of Yoon’s motives for imposing martial law was to avoid impeachment over corruption allegations.
Amid the scandal, Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, considered a key figure in the coup attempt, has resigned. The commander of the armed forces has also stepped down, stating that he was unaware of the president’s plans.
