59% of Americans support Ukraine peace talks with ceding territories to Russia – poll

A majority of Americans (59%) believe Ukraine should begin peace talks with Russia, even if it requires territorial concessions, according to data published by the Ronald Reagan Institute.

This view is shared by 63% of former President Donald Trump’s supporters and 55% of Vice President Kamala Harris’s supporters. The poll also revealed that 41% of respondents think Russia is currently winning the war (45% among Trump supporters), while only 24% believe Ukraine is winning (29% among Harris supporters and 21% among Trump supporters).

Support for arms shipments to Ukraine differs significantly: 74% of Harris’s supporters back it, compared to just 42% of Trump’s supporters. Nevertheless, 55% of Americans overall favor continuing military aid, though this figure has dropped from 59% last year.

Among those opposing aid, the most common argument is that the war does not directly involve the United States (33%). Most Americans, however, are concerned about the risks of the conflict spreading to NATO countries (78%) and the threat of authoritarian regimes invading democratic nations (75%).

Previously, a Gallup poll found that 52% of Ukrainians are open to making territorial concessions for peace. According to data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), the proportion of Ukrainians willing to consider such concessions has tripled over the past year.
