Czech Republic requests EU funds for flood damage relief

Czechia has officially requested up to 2.85 billion Czech korunas (approximately $121.2 million) from the European Union’s Solidarity Fund to cover the damages caused by September’s floods.

This was announced by the country’s Finance Minister, Zbyněk Stanjura. According to Czech public broadcaster reports, the request seeks funding to address the extensive damages caused by the floods.

The minister stated that the funds, expected by the end of 2025 or 2026, are not included in next year’s budget. He emphasized that the floods inflicted damage totaling 70.6 billion Czech korunas, primarily in the Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc regions.

He further explained that around 25 billion korunas accounted for damages to private property, while 45 billion korunas were attributed to state and municipal assets. Insurance payouts for the damages are estimated to reach 20 billion korunas.

It is worth noting that in September, severe rains and resulting floods impacted several countries in Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland, Czechia, Austria, Hungary, and Romania.
