The ruling party of Georgia, “Georgian Dream,” plans to prohibit demonstrators from covering their faces, including wearing masks at protests.
This was stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. He announced that an appropriate law would be adopted, as he said it is necessary to prevent violence during rallies.
“Such laws exist in many EU member states, and it is important to adopt such laws to prevent violence. We will technically organize everything so that the corresponding law is passed by the end of next week, and so that this law is fully implemented by the end of the month,” the prime minister stated.
“It is difficult to respond in this situation — everyone walks around in masks, ‘whoever wants to,’ as the slang goes. And such violence occurs. Many people in masks make it difficult for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to respond to these incidents: it’s impossible to distinguish who is a protester and who is not,” said the head of the Georgian government.
