Former US President Donald Trump has announced that, if re-elected, he plans to immediately pardon all individuals convicted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol events.
In his first major interview after the election, given to NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump emphasized that he would act “very quickly, on the very first day.” When asked how he would handle supporters who admitted to assaulting law enforcement officers, Trump said they “had no choice” and described them as “victims of a deeply corrupt system.”
They are told: either you serve two years in prison or you face thirty. They see their lives falling apart. Their lives have already been ruined over these two years, Trump stated.
The January 6, 2021, events saw Trump supporters storm the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory. Charges were brought against 1,500 individuals in connection with the incident, with over 1,200 convicted or having pleaded guilty.
