Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó promised to veto the proposal for sanctions against Georgian officials over the crackdown on anti-government protests.
He made this statement at a press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze. Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary is firmly opposed to sanctions against Georgian officials, stating:
If the opposition had won the elections, Brussels would have loudly praised democracy in Georgia, claiming that it had never been so strong. However, the conservative party won, and they are doing everything to ignore the will of the people.
The minister added that the EU and the “international liberal elite” should not question the “sovereign right of the Georgian people to decide the future of their country.”
It was previously reported that the situation in Georgia, including potential sanctions, will be discussed at the EU Foreign Affairs Council on December 16.
