Israeli tanks reportedly 16 miles from Damascus after Assad’s fall

Israeli tanks have reportedly advanced into Syrian territory, reaching up to 16 miles southwest of Damascus, after Israel seized a buffer zone in southern Syria following the sudden overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad by a rebel coalition.

Israeli forces are said to have reached Qatana, located six miles into Syria east of the Golan Heights, while carrying out heavy airstrikes on Syrian military assets. These raids destroyed helicopters, jets, and Republican Guard equipment around Damascus, with estimates claiming up to 200 airstrikes were launched.

Israel claims its actions are defensive and not an intervention in Syria’s internal conflict, stating that it took “limited and temporary measures” to secure its border. The Israeli military has vowed to continue airstrikes for several days. Despite Israel’s explanation, Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia condemned the incursion, with Saudi Arabia warning it could undermine Syria’s chances of restoring stability.

As Israel’s actions unfold, the mood in Damascus remains celebratory, as Assad fled to Moscow, marking the end of his 50-year family rule. Syria’s prime minister has agreed to transfer power to the rebel-led Salvation Government, which is based in northwest Syria. However, questions remain about Syria’s future governance, as the rebel coalition, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has yet to provide a clear roadmap for the country’s transition.

The rapid developments in Syria have left the international community, including the UN, in shock. Russia, a key ally of Assad, played a significant role in the regime’s defense. The swift fall of Assad’s regime, following 13 years of civil war, has spurred concerns about regional instability, with oil prices rising as a result. The US, meanwhile, is engaging with regional partners to explore diplomatic avenues for Syria’s future.
