The Swiss government is suspending the asylum procedure for Syrians until it can better assess the situation in the Middle Eastern country following the rebels’ capture of Damascus.
The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration announced this on X (Twitter).
As stated by the Secretariat on Monday evening, December 9, the country currently cannot thoroughly verify whether there are grounds for granting asylum to Syrians or whether it would be appropriate to execute deportation orders.
“The Secretariat is suspending asylum procedures and decision-making processes for Syrian asylum seekers with immediate effect until the situation is reassessed,” the statement reads.
It is worth noting that on December 8, Syrian rebels claimed to have taken control of the capital, Damascus, signaling the end of more than two decades of Assad’s rule. Assad is reportedly in Moscow.
Following this development, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Greece, Sweden, and the Netherlands also announced the suspension of asylum application reviews for Syrian refugees.
