Hungarian Foreign Minister vows to block EU sanctions against Georgian officials

Hungary has pledged to block potential European Union sanctions against high-ranking Georgian officials in connection with the country’s perceived anti-Western pivot and suppression of protests.

This statement was made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

After meeting with Georgia’s new Foreign Minister in Budapest, Szijjártó stated that European sanctions against Georgian officials would be “senseless and unjust” and that Hungary would block them if necessary.

He further noted that both Hungary and Georgia have “patriotic governments” in power, which are facing “political and ideological attacks from the liberal mainstream.” Szijjártó also criticized the European Parliament’s resolution calling for new elections in Georgia, describing it as “an affront to the Georgian people.”

Szijjártó emphasized that Georgian voters had chosen a “patriotic, conservative government committed to peace and family values” and that this stance is the reason for pressure from Brussels and doubts about the democratic nature of the elections.

He also promised Georgia support in “accelerating its European integration.”
