Moldova takes steps to safeguard critical infrastructure amid energy crisis concerns

Moldova is compiling a list of critical infrastructure facilities that must not be left without electricity in the event of an emergency in the country’s energy sector.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean plans to address parliament on December 16 to request the declaration of a state of emergency in the energy sector due to the potential halt of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.

Authorities are currently developing an action plan for handling an energy sector emergency, including potential power outages. The government is set to review the plan during its December 11 session.

Under the plan, essential facilities such as hospitals, kindergartens, water, gas, and heating supply centers, the airport, the railway, national television, as well as the parliament, government, presidential administration, and other key government institutions will be classified as “critical infrastructure” that cannot be disconnected from the power grid.

Other consumers not categorized as “critical” will be supplied with electricity on equitable and non-discriminatory terms, depending on the technical capacity of system operators.
