Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that his country had proposed a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange to Ukraine, but President Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly rejected the initiative.
Commenting on a tweet by Zelensky, in which the Ukrainian president strongly criticized Orbán’s talks with Vladimir Putin, Orbán stated that Hungary was concluding its presidency of the EU Council with renewed efforts to achieve peace.
We proposed a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange. Unfortunately, President Zelensky clearly rejected and ruled out this possibility today. We did everything we could! Orbán wrote.
However, the Hungarian Prime Minister did not specify in his statement whether a similar proposal was made to Russian President Vladimir Putin or what his reaction was.
Orbán also said that Hungary would continue to use all diplomatic means to facilitate a ceasefire and establish peace in Ukraine. According to Hungary’s Foreign Minister, during the hour-long discussion with Putin, they talked about Hungary’s energy security, the war in Ukraine, and the situation in Syria.
