Mateusz Morawiecki, the former Prime Minister of Poland, will take over leadership of the “European Conservatives and Reformists” (ECR) group in the European Parliament, replacing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
This change is expected to be announced on December 15 during the closing of the Atreju conservative youth festival in Rome, according to the Italian portal Il Giornale.
The ECR, a group of “soft Euroskeptics,” aims to elect new leadership by mid-January in time for Donald Trump’s inauguration in the U.S. on January 20. The transition may also include reshuffling the vice-presidential positions within the group, with smaller parties possibly gaining these roles.
Giorgia Meloni, who became ECR leader in 2020, marking her rise in mainstream politics, will step down as head of the group. The ECR is currently the sixth-largest faction in the European Parliament, with 64 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
