Germany expects the share of “green” electricity in gross electricity consumption to reach a new high of 54% this year. This was reported by the Office of the Working Group on Renewable Energy Statistics at the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).
The 54% figure is 1.5 percentage points higher than the previous year, according to the office. In 2023, a record of 52.5% had already been achieved, marking the first time that more than half of Germany’s electricity consumption was covered by renewable energy sources. In 2022, this share was still at 46.3%.
Data suggests that electricity generation from renewable sources, primarily wind and solar energy, is expected to grow by four percentage points this year to approximately 285 terawatt-hours.
Final figures for 2024 will be released by the agency in March.
