The South Korean parliament is poised to support the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to lawmaker Song Young-gil.
He stated that at least 212 lawmakers, including opposition members and some from the ruling party, are expected to vote in favor of the resolution. A minimum of 200 votes is required for its approval.
The impeachment is based on accusations against Yoon Suk Yeol for violating the Constitution, attempting to seize power, and imposing martial law in December. During these events, troops attempted to blockade the parliament and detain lawmakers, prompting widespread condemnation.
President Yoon’s approval rating has dropped to 11%, with 75% of citizens supporting his removal, according to a Gallup Korea poll. The parliament plans to hold a vote, after which the case will be referred to the Constitutional Court. During the proceedings, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will act as interim head of state.
The opposition accuses Yoon Suk Yeol and his allies of orchestrating a coup and demands accountability for senior military and government officials involved in attempts to undermine democratic institutions.
