According to data from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), 19,000 cases of sexual harassment were reported in 2023 — nearly double the number recorded in 2017. On average, 52 such incidents are reported daily across the country.
The introduction of sexual harassment legislation in 2016 has led to a significant increase in the number of investigations.
BKA data indicates that 41% of suspects are of foreign origin, slightly higher than the 39% reported in 2021. The incidents range from unwanted physical contact to serious assaults.
In Dresden, 41-year-old cleaner Johanna W. was attacked by a hotel guest who suddenly grabbed her chest. Despite being shocked, she filed a police report. The court ordered the perpetrator to pay a fine.
Another incident, also in Dresden, occurred in an underground parking lot where 35-year-old Maria K. was attacked by a man who attempted to harass her. She managed to defend herself, leading to the assailant’s arrest. The court sentenced him to eight months of probation.
