Greece to decommission 10 military camps as part of restructuring plan

The Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) announced on Monday a plan to decommission several military camps across Greece as part of Defense Minister Nikos Dendias’s initiative to reorganize the armed forces.

A total of 10 military camps located in Laconia, Phthiotis, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, Kos, and Evros will be closed. Their units will be relocated and integrated into other camps within the same regions.

The first phase of the plan, focusing on consolidating under-strength units to enhance the operational efficiency of Greece’s armed forces, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The second phase, which will involve further closures, relocations, and mergers of units, is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2025.

Once the relocations and mergers are finalized, the decommissioned camps will be handed over to the National Defense Fund for further management.
