On Sunday, December 15, Bulgarian customs officials discovered approximately 190 kilograms of cocaine hidden aboard a ship in the Black Sea port of Burgas.
According to Bulgarian law enforcement, a cargo ship from Peru, with a crew of 11 people, was transporting copper concentrate for processing at a plant, when the cocaine was found on board.
Police estimate the seized cocaine’s value at $7 million. The drugs were scattered in various locations along the ship’s pipelines.
An investigation has been launched into the suspected recipients of the cocaine, who could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of drug trafficking.
In late November, Belgian authorities discovered around 5 tons of cocaine hidden in containers at the Port of Antwerp. Recently, in the UK, a court sentenced 18 members of a criminal group involved in the country’s largest drug trafficking case.
