Fidesz MEP: Illegal migration must be stopped

Hungary and Italy both hold the view that illegal migration should be halted while allowing genuine refugees to enter Europe, according to Fidesz MEP Enikő Győri.

She expressed this position on Monday in Strasbourg, during a book presentation held alongside a European Parliament plenary session.

Győri, a member of the Patriots for Europe group, stated that since 2015, Hungary has been the only EU country to maintain a consistent stance on migration. She noted that Hungary has worked closely with Italy’s current government on migration issues, and increasingly more Europeans are aligning with Hungary’s position.

She criticized the new EU migration and asylum pact, supported by the European People’s Party (EPP) and left-wing groups, arguing that it did not address the problem. According to Győri, the mandatory redistribution of migrants among EU member states effectively acted as an invitation to migrants.

While Hungary refused to vote in favor of the migration package, five other countries also disagreed with it. Győri added that even before the pact took effect, twenty “sane” EU member states had written to the European Commission, urging a renegotiation. The Patriots, she emphasized, “have planted our flag for change.”
