Germany plans to increase the size of the Bundeswehr to 230,000 troops

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the possibility of increasing the country’s armed forces to 230,000 personnel.

This move aims to strengthen national defense capabilities and fulfill NATO commitments. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, December 18, Pistorius noted that the Bundeswehr currently has around 180,000 troops — 20,000 short of the current target due to recruitment challenges.

We plan to increase the number of personnel to 203,000 and potentially reach 230,000, aligning with NATO’s target levels for forces and resources, the minister emphasized.
