The bodies of eight migrants, who died following an incident with their boat, were found near the Greek island of Rhodes.
According to Reuters, citing Greece’s coast guard, the tragedy occurred due to the vessel’s dangerous maneuvers. The coast guard reported that the migrants ended up in the water when their boat made risky moves. So far, rescuers have managed to save 18 people, but the search and rescue operation is ongoing.
The incident marks another tragedy in a series of similar events in the region. In early November, four migrants—three men and one woman—died while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), more than 48,000 migrants arrived in Greece between January and October 2023, making the country the second-largest arrival point for migrants in Southern Europe, after Italy.
In response to the growing flow of migrants, Greek authorities are considering the establishment of a detention center on the island of Rhodes. This measure is aimed at improving the management of the increasing number of migrants arriving from neighboring Turkey.
